Bloggers Arrest Is On Rise

Article 19 of Universal Declaration of Human Rights declares

Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.
The World Information Access Project at the University of Washington released a report on arrested bloggers which identified 64 bloggers , who were unaffiliated with other media , had been arrested for the contents of the blogs between 2003 and 2008.
The growing number of such blogger arrests underscores the political importance of blogging around the world . WIA’s concludes :
After surveying our data, we predict that the number of blogger arrests will rise in 2008. The popularity of online blogs continues to grow and inspire more media coverage of arrest incidents. Countries are enforcing greater Internet regulation, which will only increase with the elections in China, Pakistan, Iran and the United States this year.
Trendsspotting blog reports "Blogs are a mainstream media world-wide and a collective rival to traditional media". So are you suprised if Iran considers a law to murder bloggers ? And if China arrests political blogger & co-founder of China’s Netizen Party Guo Quan ?

Top 20 Words in Obama's Berlin Speech

Senator Barack Obama addressed 200,000 people on Thursday July 24th in Berlin, near the site where the Berlin Wall once stood. This graph shows the top 10 words used in Obama's speech. The Democratic presidential hopeful's speech metaphorically used the Berlin Wall, a Cold War icon, to reassure cross-Atlantic alliance.

"The walls between old allies on either side of the Atlantic cannot stand."
Since last January Germany has swiftly developed "Obama-mania". Sen. Obama's speech, as a proud citizen of the US and a fellow citizen of the world, acknowledges this popularity.
"People of Berlin - people of the world - this is our moment. This is our time."
During the Bush administration, relations between Europe and the United States were often strained. Obama's Berlin speech underscores new hope and optimism between Europe and America.
"America has no better partner than Europe. Now is the time to build new bridges across the globe as strong as the one that bound us across the Atlantic. Now is the time to join together, through constant cooperation, strong institutions, shared sacrifice, and a global commitment to progress, to meet the challenges of the 21st century."
"Obama-mania" may evaporate rather quickly if the senator becomes president. However Sen. Obama's visits throws a strong signal of an imminent improvement in the transatlantic relationship.

anewc2: If a suicide epidemic is sweeping Japan, then why did the rate go down slightly between 2000-2004? From the graph it appears that it's an epidemic of unemployment sweeping Japan, while suicide rates have not responded to it in recent years as they did during the 1990s. (11 months ago)
