How much time do you spend each day watching YouTube, surfing pics on Facebook, gossiping during a long lunch break, or making your next hair apointment? (All of the above? Tsk, tsk.) Salary.com surveyed over 2,500 employees at all job levels to find out what people really do while they're at work. Seventy-three percent of respondents said they spent part of their day on activities that are not work-related; this graph shows what kinds of activities they did. Why? Forty-six percent of respondents are unsatisfied with their jobs. —Natalie

Haha. Or wasting time overtime. I believe respondents were allowed to answer with more than one activity.

This isn't actually a graph of the average proportion of time spent on these activites, but the proportion of people who engage in them.

I'm surprised the figures are so low. Only one in 5 make personal calls? (is that daily, or ever?) Only half use the internet for things not related to the day job? In my experience that suggests most of the other half are either lieing or don't turn up at work at all... but I guess there are a few people who don;t have computers as part of their jobs.

Interestingly, if you deduct taht group from the denominator to work out the proportion of those who have regular access to a computer who use the internet at work for no-work purposes, I bet the figure you get is nearer 99%!

Yup. Guess that wasn't quite clear from the description. The graph shows the percent of people who engaged in these activities on a daily basis.

In terms of time spent wasting time at work, the report says, "Twenty-two percent of respondents admit to wasting up to two hours per day, down slightly from 24 percent in 2007."
